The Community by Christine Gregory is a fiction novel set in regional Australia featuring a perfect mixture of crime, mystery and drama. This book focuses on the secrets hidden within the Sunshine Coast Hinterland community of Steels Creek, which becomes embroiled in a thrilling mystery after suspicious circumstances occur in the quiet community. The scenery was so beautifully described that I could vividly picture Steels Creek and felt fully immersed. The plot had me captivated till the very end. I could not put this book down! 5 stars! Brittany, VIC, 5 stars

A crime story a little different from the norm. “The Community” has many threads: a disgraced newspaper writer who had some ethics that got him in trouble; a small community that thinks it is egalitarian; lots of secrets, and drug dealers; some suspicion of corruption in high places. Then there is a murder which affects the local community in many different ways. Gregory fleshes out her characters well. The descriptions of the countryside, the heat and humidity, as well as the dry and dusty bush and the mud after rain made me feel uncomfortable. I was engrossed by the events described and kept in suspense until the end. I am glad that the perpetrators were caught and identified. I found the storyline very believable. You do not always know what goes on behind closed doors. Anne, NSW, 5 stars

This book grabbed my attention and held it the whole way through. There were characters I loved but also characters I couldn’t quite work out if I liked or disliked. Once I got closer to the end I worked out why! Great read that keeps you guessing. Amanda, SA, 5 stars

Lars Nilsson is a man trying to find his way back. His marriage is long gone; his relationship with his only daughter also collateral damage from a run in between his investigative reporting and a significant story he broke about police corruption. These days he’s living a quieter life on a block next door to his oldest school friend, in a private community in Queensland. Steels Creek is that private community. Part hippie commune, part collection of secrets, Steels Creek is the small community that finds itself at the centre of a murder mystery when a young Australian-Israeli traveller is found dead in a water hole. Christine Gregory is a debut author; a prior version of The Community won the Banjo Patterson Prize in 2022. Gregory’s work is reminiscent of Jane Harper, and is a cracking first novel. The book is an excellent psychological thriller, a compelling read. Gregory builds a comprehensive story: she establishes the local community in Steels Creek, fills it full of well developed characters, and surrounds it with evocative Australian bush. The Community is a fast paced story that keeps you turning pages long into the night. Strongly recommended for fans of crime fiction; I’m hopeful that this is just the first in a series about Nilsson. Kylie, SA, 5 stars

I was completely hooked from the beginning and read it in 2 days! The prologue set the scene well, and left me wondering about the characters, keeping me guessing from the beginning. I have enjoyed this book and will definitely recommend this book to my fellow book club members! Voula, SA, 5 stars

A really fast paced crime thriller that had me not wanting to put it down. I loved the engaging characters especially Lars who while seeking out a life of quiet anonymity, gets caught up in the chase of his life to save those he cares about. A great read. Highly recommend. Graciela, NSW, 5 stars

Wow what a twisty, turbie ‘who dun it’ thriller! Absolutely loved reading this book & trying to figure out who was the killer & definitely didn’t expect the curveball that was revealed at the end. Highly recommend, a fantastic read. Melanie, VIC, 5 stars

A complex and compelling crime story with an emotional edge that had me gripped, right to the end. Loved the backdrop to the story making it more irresistible. Really enjoyed this gritty tale Kim, NSW, 5 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory, was a great read. This was an easy read, the story steadily built and had me guessing throughout the book as to where it would go next. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development, and the setting of the book. The community is set in regional Australia and centres around the families who live there. The story involves a murder and a missing girl. Lars, a local journalist is the main character, who himself is battling his own past and family issues. I would very much recommend this book. Kelly, VIC, 5 stars

The Community has all the ingredients of a whodunit novel. It is gripping with a story that is hard to put down. The disappearance of friends, a murder, small town gossip, townsfolk scared to talk, a journalist with a hidden past; it is a crime mystery that I am sure will become a best seller in Australia. Looking forward to the next book from the author. Cheryl, VIC, 5 stars

Great read for all full of murder, suspense & intrigue. It did take a little while for me to determine who was who but that could just be me lol! Interesting characters, great storyline highly recommended. Katrina, QLD, 5 stars

I literally could not put this book down! The Community by Christine Gregory is set in a small Community in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. With an interesting set up, everyone knows everyone in Steels Creek. The story centres around Lars Nilsson a disgraced investigative journalist who has moved away from the big smoke to hide away from the world. But when a body is found at a local waterfall and his best mate’s daughter go missing he is has no option but to pick up the skills he has tried to hard to leave behind. The relationships in this story are beautifully written and perfectly intertwined. You could feel the frustrating imperfection of human nature. I loved this book and will be actively looking for more work by Christine Gregory. Thank you for the privilege of being able to review The Community. Michelle, TAS, 5 stars

Christine Gregory’s The Community places her alongside some of Australia’s finest thriller writers. Reminiscent of the work of Jane Harper and Shelley Burr, this novel is set in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in what should be an idyllic, ‘get-away-from-it-all’ community. But Steels Creek is a community hiding so many secrets it’s gradually being torn apart. The residents are a cast of fascinating characters, including former investigative journalist Lars Nilsson; his best friend Joe, whose daughter Skye goes missing; and a mysterious couple from Israel, who are more than just backpacking tourists. The Community is gripping from start to finish and difficult to put down. A fine debut novel by an author who can proudly stand beside some of Australia’s best. Chris, QLD, 5 stars

Lars is a journalist with a murky past who has started a new life in a tight-knit community. When a dead body is found and a teenager goes missing, Lars can’t resist the temptation to get involved. This a great Australian thriller with lots of twists and turns, and characters you’ll enjoy spending time with. Anne, VIC, 5 stars

I found the pace of this book fantastic, it was easy to read and very easy to enjoy! The characters were likeable and believable, the tension and gossip of small town living kept you intriged and interested. Everyone has a secret to protect and a past to keep quiet and what more perfect place then at the community! A definite read for lovers of Australian crime drama! Kate, TAS, 5 stars

I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to read and review The Community by Christine Gregory as I particularly enjoy books in the Crime genre. I gave this book a rating of 5 stars (out of 5). The book opens with two separate scenes both set on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia. The first scene is written during an electrical and rain storm and the second is set early the next morning after both the rain and storm have abated. I particularly liked the characters of Lars Nilsson (a journalist), his estranged daughter Annika who lives with her mother and stepfather in Brisbane (a law student) and Joe and Ruth McDonald a couple resident in Steels Creek “the community” of the books title. General themes in the book cover fatherhood, family ties and redemption told through the eyes of Lars a man struggling to make peace with his past. This book was very easy to read and kept me engaged from beginning to end and did not disappoint. Overall I found The Community a very enjoyable and interesting read. Whilst initially I was particularly keen to read this book as it was listed as Crime it was much more than that. As per the title the book is about a ‘Community’ so there are lots of relationships and connections between the residents which also ensure that the story is an interesting read. Toni, SA, 5 stars

Christine Gregory’s main character in The Community is Lars Nilsson, a reclusive reporter. As he is caught up in a local murder, we see him face a gamut of emotions and emotional situations. His best friend’s daughter goes missing. At the same time he’s trying to resurrect his relationship with his estranged daughter. Lars puts his investigative skills to the test as he gathers information on his community members to solve the murder. A very engaging novel. Eleanor, WA, 5 stars

Christine Gregory has taken a genre that can be staid or predictable and built such colourful and complex characters that it is impossible not to be gripped by the narrative. Set in Steel Creek on the Sunshine Coast, we meet Lars Nilsson. Lars is the brooding type. His life is a twisted tale of miscalculations and losses. For a journalist he seems to struggle with verbal communication. You can almost see his unshaven face and dishevelled appearance. He has told himself that he is running toward something better but in reality he is running away, trying desperately to forget. But there is something quite loveable about him and as a reader I found myself desperately wanting him to succeed … at everything … or anything. I don’t generally like Australian fiction but Gregory has sold me with her description of this idyllic place and its characters. There is something very convincing and likeable about the way she has painted Australia and its people. It’s almost endearing – from the Biker gang to the wayward kids and those aspiring for a better life in the city. There is a beauty in the combination of these elements. And despite the fact that so much of the action in this book takes place in perfect, isolated waterholes surrounded by lush forests, there is definitely a sense of community about The Community. I think what Gregory does exceptionally is describe the landscape. From the “verdant ferns carpeting the undergrowth” to the “gush of the falls” and the “kookaburras’ mad cackling” combined with repeated references to the humidity… sweat dripping, showers every few hours, clothes soaked through. It’s quite masterful. I was surprised by the introduction of two Israeli backpackers – pleasantly surprised I should add. It brought a sense of multiculturalism to an otherwise Aussie narrative that was refreshing. But mostly what has stayed with me from this story is that everyone has their baggage and despite what we may see on the outside, things are rarely as they seem. It’s easy to be judgemental until we actually take the time to appreciate every wo/man’s struggle. Justine, NSW, 5 stars

The Community kept me intrigued the whole way through the book. I read on the train to and from work and it was hard to put it down. The characters are well written and it is easy to imagine them being real life people. I live in Brisbane so could relate to a lot of the suburbs and areas that were mentioned which I liked, as it made me feel more connected to the story. Loved it! Angela, QLD, 5 stars

The Community is an addictive crime drama set in South-East Queensland. I could almost feel the humidity as I read and tried to solve the mystery. The end had me on the edge of my seat! A great read! Kelly, QLD, 5 stars

This book showed the light and dark side of closed communities. It represented how deep and tangled lies can be, particular within a family. I really enjoyed this. Amy, WA, 5 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory gripped me from the first page. It is a thriller that kept giving me more surprises with each chapter, all leading to an action filled climax. The community is set up as an alternative lifestyle for people. Lars Nilsson, a former journalist , moved there to escape from a scandal, which also cost him his marriage. When a body is found and a girl goes missing, the community starts to implode. The crimes bring police from Lars’s past, who are determined to destroy his new life. By investigating these crimes, he manages to get a lot of people off-side, including his daughter. The author’s style of writing is so descriptive that the reader can feel the humidity and picture the scenes. beautifully. I absolutely loved the way the story flowed. The characters all have their flaws, which makes them and their interactions with each other very realistic. I liked the way we saw the way the relationships in the community start to fracture as the case goes on. This is a thriller that I would definitely recommend. It keeps the reader thoroughly engrossed. Theresa, NSW, 5 stars

A brilliant detective mystery! I was completely drawn in. It’s a bit unusual in that the narrator voice shifts between characters: mainly between country policeman Sergeant Neil Davis, and Lars, the part-time crime investigative journalist. They are antagonistic towards each other, but are both hardened senior men, well experienced in what they do. We are also given insight into the world of Skye, the girl who goes missing. If you think about it, it makes sense that in a community there would be more than one person’s perspective, and more than one person putting the puzzle pieces together. Gregory introduces us to a whole community of characters, all realistic, all well-defined. Particularly poignant is her depiction of the barriers that develop between teenage or young adults and their parents, barriers that are only overcome by maturing understanding and experience. I liked that this mystery gradually came together without bizarre plot devices. It seems much more realistic than many convoluted detective stories and it actually made sense in the end. Very satisfying. Helen, SA, 5 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory is an excellent read. It is a story about Lars Nilsson who was an investigative journalist. Lars moved to Steels Creek. It is an idyllic retreat in the Sunshine Coast hinterland for a quiet life. He moved to the settlement after a public fall from grace and the crime reporting he was once feted for. When a body is found floating in a nearby waterhole, and hours later his best friend’s daughter is reported missing, Lars is compelled to investigate. He puts himself back in the cross-hairs of police. He has a strained relationship with his daughter. He tries to make amends during her visits. Lars continues to try to solve the murder plus find the missing young woman. He is warned not to do so, but he won’t stop. A very good drama. I kept on reading wanting to know how it all ends. Denise, VIC, 5 stars

Gripping and hard to put down, this novel was a “read in one sitting” story. I’ve found another author to add to my list of must reads. Loved the storyline, the setting and the way Christine shaped this multifaceted thriller. Kristy, NSW, 5 stars

I hadn’t read a crime novel in ages and now I want to read more!! The Community kept me guessing the whole way through and I loved how the character profiles kept building so you learnt more about them as the story progressed. Fabulous characters, intertwined relationships, great plot development and plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. Loved the rural community setting, descriptive prose and a fantastic ending! I read the book in one sitting! Ilona, VIC, 5 stars

From the front cover, The Community had me intrigued how the story line would be developed. All the story characters were insightful and felt very real. Each were developed to hook the reader into the story line and build a solid base for a thought provoking and powerful tale. The descriptions of the setting, the towns and almost the sound and smells of the bush draws you in.Powerful characters, pulse setting action and thought-provoking relationships makes this book hard to put down and leaves you wanting more. Loved it. Mark, SA, 5 stars

Thank you for the opportunity to review ‘The Community’ I really enjoyed this book. The story line is captivating, keeping you questioning the who and why as you continue to read. The characters within the story are intriguing. The way a small community interacted together, knowing each other but not ‘really’ knowing about each other, and the secrets within. Highly recommend it for a weekend read that will have you in suspense and intrigue the entire time! Ann, NSW, 5 stars

The Community (Christine Gregory) is an irresistible story, impossible to stop reading it. A small community called Steels Creek, located in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, has its tranquillity interrupted because of some creepy secrets that ended in a murder and a missing person. The police and a local journalist have been trying to figure out what happened and how the events are connected. This book makes you think that you never finish knowing your neighbours and what they are capable of for keeping their status quo. Cintia, VIC, 5 stars

I was very excited to receive a copy of ‘The Community’ by Christine Gregory from Better Reading Preview and it did not disappoint! This thrilling read starts with two dramatic scenes bookmarked by a raging Australian summer storm and the beautiful depiction of the Sunshine Coast hinterland landscape the morning after the skies have cleared. ‘The Community’ reflects wonderfully the experience of being an outsider in a community, lacking trust from others and with insight into the reality of situations but without the context of inter-relationships over time. The depiction of the power and influence that can be exerted within an insulated community was also well portrayed. Christine Gregory has written in ‘The Community’ characters I cared for, relationships I wanted to know more about, storylines that kept me guessing and fantastic twists without the obvious ‘insert plot twist here’ feel that some books of this genre contain. It was a fast-paced read that I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. Definitely a good read! Lisa, QLD, 5 stars

Such a phenomenal debut by Christine Gregory! I loved the setting in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. There was a very strong sense of place throughout, such atmosphere. Things moved fast, and I enjoyed how the storyline gradually unfolded, always keeping me guessing as to which suspects might be guilty for the murder which began the narrative. All characters felt well-developed, authentic, and I particularly connected with main character, Lars. The Community is a story about much more than murder though, it’s about coming to terms with our past, making decisions to improve one’s life and seeking redemption. I loved the ending and I’m already looking forward to reading more from Christine! Ellen, TAS, 5 stars

Such a well written and believable read, with an amazing setting with lush imagery adding to the fabulous experience. I love my reads to be well paced, including well developed and character with which I can hold empathy. Thoroughly relatable and propulsive, this book had me entirely invested. Compelling, rich, and gripping. Being able to witness as an outsider into a supposedly small-town happy vibe. Is it all as idyllic as it seems? Rylee, NSW, 5 stars

The Community is set in a small town in Steels Creek in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It’s full of hidden secrets, a murder, a teenager’s disappearance & a disgraced journalist determined to uncover the truth. Wow, I devoured this book, absolutely loved it, kept me guessing until the end. 10/10 Kelli, VIC, 5 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory is nothing short of a masterpiece. Reading this book felt like a collaboration between Tim Winton and Jane Harper, making it an absolute delight and a chef’s kiss of a read! Set in the picturesque Steels Creek community in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Gregory delivers a story that is as much about the beauty and essence of Australia as it is about solving a murder mystery. Although the narrative begins with a murder, the heart of this novel lies in its exploration of fatherhood, redemption, and personal transformation. Our protagonist, a washed-up journalist, embarks on a journey to turn his life around. Through his struggles and triumphs, we witness a poignant tale of learning to love and forgive, all while piecing together the clues to solve a gripping mystery. This book is an intense and captivating read from start to finish. Just when you think you have the plot figured out, Gregory throws in a twist that sends you recalculating your theories, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The unpredictability and suspense are masterfully crafted, making this a true page-turner. Gregory’s vivid descriptions of the Australian landscape are breath taking. She captures the essence of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, from its unique climate and tight-knit small-town vibe to the untamed beauty of the bushland. This setting is not just a backdrop but a character in its own right, adding depth and authenticity to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed The Community. Christine Gregory has a remarkable talent for weaving complex, emotionally resonant stories with thrilling, unpredictable plots. If you appreciate a novel that combines stunning Australian scenery, profound themes of redemption, and a captivating murder mystery, this book is a must-read. Five stars, without hesitation! Mercury, NSW, 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is an easy read, moving at a fast pace. Living in Brisbane myself, and having frequently visited the Sunshine Coast, I was right at home with where the story is set, easily able to visualise the various settings. All the characters are well developed, with a storyline that unfolds piece by piece, with titbits of information or new suspects added throughout the investigation, leading to a dramatic but totally believable conclusion. I felt a special affinity for Lars, the main character, trying his best to connect with his daughter and his community. Maree, QLD, 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it over the one day, I just had to finish it. I loved how the prologue in the beginning kept me wondering throughout the book who that bit was about. Did I have it worked out? The back story on Lars and his daughter Annika kept me wondering in other directions. For those that love a good who-dunnit, I would recommend this book. Great read. Tracey, NSW, 5 stars

Had my interest from the first paragraph. Set on the Sunshine Coast a murder mystery was about to begin. One of the best I have read in a while, the characters were well developed with a lovely intergenerational plotline developing along side the murder mystery. The narrative flowed well and as the plot thickened so did the subplots between the characters. A great read. Ainsley, QLD, 5 stars

Fantastic read. Kept me guessing until the end. I read it in one sitting as I could not put it down. It made me want to keep turning those pages to see how it was going to end. I loved the main characters and felt empathy for the character Lars. He certainly has not had it easy with his past. I enjoy a good murder mystery and Christine Gregory has captured this really well. It was easy to read and follow. Sharon, NSW, 5 stars

Even though “The Community” wouldn’t be my typical ‘taste’, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really loved that any assumptions I made about characters or plot were always incorrect. Reading takes you into other lives “The Community” does this on multiple levels. It shows what life can be like for all stages of life and for a myriad of reasons. It enables us to feel how it would be to live in an isolated small community. It’s shows us that nothing is ever as simple as it seems. I wholeheartedly recommend this as your next read. Vanessa, VIC, 5 stars

This is Australian crime fiction done well. A can’t-look-away prologue. Tension and intrigue that gain the momentum of a racehorse near the finish line. An explosive ending. Tick, tick, tick! And just when I thought I had it all figured out, I was completely blindsided, which is exactly how I like my murder mysteries. This is an easy and enjoyable read that gets better as you go. E, QLD, 4 stars

Love Australian crime books and The Community by Christine Gregory did not disappoint. You know a book is good when you can’t put it down. Will keep a look out for this author in the future. From the time i picked up the book I just wanted to keep turning pages to find out what was going to happen next. If you like aussie crime books set in small towns ‘The Community’ is worth reading. Maria, SA, 4 stars

If you think this book is about a strange group living away from society, you’d be wrong, it’s a wonderful story with plenty of twists and turns to explore! I love the Australian feel that is woven through the storyline, there’s also the question of trust and friendship, along with a strong sense of family. Lars is a great central character and we learn from his experiences and views of the people around him. In today’s world there can be those who aren’t who we think, don’t believe in honesty and integrity, nor do they care for other’s opinions. The pace of the story is woven with suspense, suspicion and revelations! I found myself invested in the characters and loved the writing style, a highly recommended read! Vikki, TAS, 4 stars

An intriguing suspense novel set in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, The Community has, at its heart, a story about past secrets, family dynamics and learning to love the life that was never envisaged. Larrs Nilsson is an occasional and former full time journalist who is thrust into the memories of his past to face his present by reporting on a local murder and missing teen. The Community kept me eagerly turning the pages from the prologue all the way until the very last word. I enjoyed the descriptive language used to create the atmosphere and tension of the story. The characters had depth and the reader could feel like they were living and breathing right there in Steels Creek. A thrilling Australian suspense novel that fans of Jane Harper will love. Amber, QLD, 4 stars

This is an enthralling book – lets go with slow crime story. Community based story in Regional Queensland. This deals with relationships, crime and investigative journalism. Problems seem to follow our main character but works through the issues of Police involvement, past investigations and relationships to help solve the mystery. Good had time to connect with family. Dale, VIC, 4 stars

Being from Queensland the locality descriptions really resonated with me. I love a good crime drama and this one was up there with the best. Gail, WA, 4 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory, set in Steels Creek Community in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Australia was a hard book to put down. The characters come across as realistic and relatable in many aspects as they show their flaws while being down to earth. While the story starts out with a body being found floating in a remote waterhole, it’s not your typical mystery, it’s more a story about the people of the Steels Creek Community themselves. With many a plot twist you think you know what’s happening then something happens and you need to rethink your theory’s. Definitely a captivating murder mystery with a little bit of family drama thrown in to the mix. Jody, SA, 4 stars

Set in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast Qld, a girl’s body is found and a local girl goes missing. Marketed as a crime drama / thriller, I’m not sure it is exactly that. It’s not a police procedural, nor is it a detective story – the main voice that of ‘former’ journalist Lars who lives in an intentional community. It is more a story about a community struggling to keep their individual secrets safe as the detectives (and locals) attempt to solve the murder and find the missing girl. The final scenes were a bit clunky (maybe unbelievable in part) and there were a few times I winced at the ‘newbie’ writing. I enjoyed the descriptive writing, especially of the landscape, the skies, the trees and the birdlife. Who can you trust? Remember everyone has a history. Gregory is a new voice in the Aussie Noir genre. This is a good debut novel and I’ll be watching her mature as a novelist. And I was happy it was not padded out to 400+ pages! Katie, NSW, 4 stars

The Community is a small town mystery set in the stunning Queensland Sunshine Coast hinterland, where while secrets bubble under the surface, no one expected the discovery of a dead body. Add a journals MC who is running from his past – but can’t help getting involved once it becomes personal – and it’s impossible not to keep turning the pages. The Community is a crime drama with unique characters, irresistible emotional layers and a twist that doesn’t feel forced. Can’t wait for Christine Gregory’s next one. Inessa, NSW, 4 stars

I enjoyed this murder mystery and didn’t guess who did it. Kept my attention all the way till the end. Interesting insight into life in a Community where you have to buy shares to get your house sale approved. Everyone knows your name and most things about you. Drinking alcohol and doing drugs seemed to be the thing to do. Lars, the main character , was a a bit of a loser and lost his family because of it. He spends most of the book trying to redeem himself and have a relationship with his daughter. Interesting characters include young adults trying to find their way in a small town setting. A murder is committed and it’s an interesting path to find out the truth. Police corruption plays a part too. Well written and a satisfying read! Lynette Edgerton, VIC, 4 stars

I really enjoyed reading ‘The Community’. Full of drama, twists and turns, I was hooked from the start and couldn’t put it down. I loved the Australian setting. The characters are interesting and the book was well written. I’d recommend it! Bianca, NSW, 4 stars

Loved this! The setting I could visualise so well, and the story worked perfectly with this setting. It was paced really nicely and I wanted to keep reading. I would be happy to read another book by Christine! Roz, VIC, 4 stars

Who are the couple in the van? What have they done and why are they running? Where are they going to in the midst of the storm? You just have to read on but it’s quite a while before the pieces come together? Meanwhile a body is found as was to be expected and the police kick into gear. Lars, a journalist, a former lionised investigative crime reporter, now freelancing for a local newspaper on the Sunshine Coast after falling foul of the police over a major crime in Brisbane, is sent to get the story. He moved to the quiet, rural area in the hinterland to lick his wounds; divorced and struggling to get his relationship with his adult daughter that he rarely sees, back on track. Friends and neighbours in the community where he lives are involved in the murder and the disappearance of another, but who is guilty? His daughter comes into danger and the novel rushes to a nail-biting conclusion. I’d like to meet Lars again and see his relationships grow and see him accepted back into mainstream journalism. I enjoyed the book. Ms Gregory has introduced a good character into the crime scene in Australia. Pamela, NSW, 4 stars

A compelling and light reading book -The Community by Christine Gregory. About the backwoods community in the Sunshine Coast. It revolves around a murder, drug dealing and a person gone missing. Definitely keeps you interested right to the end. Definitely a good read. Jackie, QLD, 4 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory is set in a retreat in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The book is a fast paced murder mystery which keeps you on your seat until the very end. Its quick to read and keeps you guessing. Lars is a well developed character who loves his community. A must read for fans of Jane Harper and Chris Hammer. Brenda, NSW, 4 stars

I felt ‘The Community’ was extremely well written. Crime books are not my favourite genre but this novel was a compelling read. I had great empathy for Lars Nilsson, a once feted investigative crime journalist who once made enemies exposing violent crimes and corrupt cops some years ago. He felt compelled to lead a more unobtrusive life and settled in an idyllic rural township on the Sunshine Coast hinterland working as a freelance journalist for a trashy tabloid. His vulnerabilities in the relationships with his daughter, an ex-wife and within the community were palpable. His integrity in investigating a murder there came at a great cost to himself but he felt compelled to pursue it and seek justice. He was ostracised by his neighbours within the community and the police; such a terrible crime was unheard of in peaceful Steele’s Creek. It became a gripping drama and I was hooked. Judith, VIC, 4 stars

A great mystery read, set in rural Australia with very distinctive scenery which I just love in an Australian set novel. A great pace which starts almost immediately and keeps us guessing to the end. I really enjoyed this novel, and getting to know the small town characters with their different personalities and how it all tied into the mystery. A solid 4 star read which I thank Better Reading for the opportunity to review. Sally, NSW, 4 stars

When you leave your old life behind to find solace in the new paradise but it appears that bad luck follows you. Trying to reconnect with your daughter only to find you keep failing. Tragedy strikes your best friends’ family and you wonder if The Community you moved to actually wants to help or hinder your efforts.Who is really on whos side?! A well written easy read. Short chapters make it flow nicely Sharnee, QLD, 4 stars

I found The Community a compelling read with a satisfying ending. The setting was refreshing and sets it apart from the growing trend of ‘outback’ Aussie thrillers. The landscape was so beautifully painted by the author that it felt like the location was another character in the story. There were some weighty and interesting characters that were more three dimensional than others. A character list and location map would have been an added bonus. I loved the blend of back stories and present drama, cleverly interwoven. The slow reveal of the characters secrets and the story’s twists and turns kept me hooked. A solid Australian crime drama/thriller that I would recommend to those who love the genre! Jill, VIC, 4 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory paints a lovely backdrop of Australian summer storms and the sunshine Coast Hinterland, in the midst of plot twists surrounding an unexpected murder. My favourite character was Lars, a man trying to uncover the truths at all costs. Matilda, QLD, 4 stars

The Community was everything I wanted and nothing that I was expecting. I went into this thinking cult and soon realised it was anything but. I devoured this book in less than a day, I could not put it down as it kept me guessing until the end. I will be highly anticipating a sequel. Fingers crossed. Gregory draws you straight in from the start with her down to earth, everyday flawed characters. What you think is a lovely community built on mutual ideals is soon turned on its head and makes you wonder just how much you know about your own neighbours and community. I would highly recommend The Community to anyone that enjoys an Australian based crime novel. Mel, NSW, 4 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this crime drama set on the Sunshine Coast of Australia. The story was well written, easy to follow and a thrilling page turner. The intricate and personal details which defined each character had you hooked emotionally and in desperation to close the case of murder and the missing person. I really liked how this booked finished offering closure to the reader which is rare in similar reads. Jess, QLD, 4 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory had me hooked from the very first page. It is an engrossing mystery filled with interesting and relatable characters. It is set on the Sunshine Coast in the north of Australia in the fictional, idyllic town of Steels Creek. The quiet, friendly township is rocked when a body is found floating in a waterhole and a young woman goes missing the same day. The Community is mostly told through the eyes of a middle-aged reporter, Lars Nilsson, who has moved to the quiet town after things have gone awry in his personal and professional life. Gregory writes the characters well and ensures the reader is invested in their relationships and lives through carefully constructed dialogue and fleshed out back stories. I particularly enjoyed the way she shaped the rocky relationship between Lars and his adult daughter, Annika. Annika is a bright and feisty young woman studying to be a lawyer and she finds herself thrust into the middle of the drama while visiting her dad for the weekend. A well written and gripping page turner, I recommend The Community to all crime fiction lovers, especially fans of Patricia Wolf and Jane Harper. Mary-Jo, VIC, 4 stars

Lars Nilsson has moved to Steels Creek for the quiet life. When the daughter of his best friend goes missing and a body is found near a waterhole, he feels the need to investigate. Touted as a fast paced and thrilling story about fatherhood family ties and redemption, I felt I was misled. The plot was excellent. It was a great story. However it was not fast paced and I wouldn’t classified it as a thriller. The people were so believable and the dialogue was so well written. It all felt real. It was wonderful to read a book set in Australia in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Those reading the story would get an excellent appreciation for the Australian language as well. It’s not your typical mystery, it was more a story about the people themselves. I would recommend this to people who like Australian authors. People who like Jane Harper, Garry Disher and perhaps even Fiona McIntosh would find this enjoyable. Corinne, SA, 4 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Community by Christine Gregory. Although touted as a crime story, I found it to be much more with the crime aspect almost a secondary plot. The book is set in the Sunshine Coast, one of my favourite places in Queensland, around a group of people who have set up a community as a ‘tree change.’ The characters are realistic, and Christine portrays the politics within the group very well. The story is told by Lars, a disgraced journalist trying to reconnect with his daughter, make sense of his life, and decide what his future might be. We get to know his 21 year old daughter on a forced weekend visit where she reluctantly joins a couple of local friends partying with a visiting Israeli couple. The plot then revolves around the girls, ending up with a murder. Enter the police, interesting characters including an old adversary of Lars. Lars now writes for the local weekly newspaper and is put under pressure to report on the murder, causing more issues within the community. When one of the local girls goes missing tensions soar and the fun begins. I found the pace of the book excellent, became invested in the characters very quickly and it was a great read rugged up on a cold winter afternoon. Catherine, QLD, 4 stars

Set in the Queensland hinterland north west of Brisbane, The Community is a gated co-op that costs a motza to buy into. That should mean it’s a safe place to be, right? Well, almost. A young woman is found dead and another disappears on the same night. The protagonist, Lars, is a disgraced journo living (hiding) in the Community who puts the pieces together quicker than the police. He’s a likeable character with broken relationships but potential for repair. The pace of the novel is good; there’s interesting tension between Lars and the police, and the conclusion is satisfying. Another good example of ‘aussie noir’. Would read the author again. Yvonne, NSW, 4 stars

The Community was full of twists and turns and by halfway through just couldn’t put it down. Really enjoyed the way the book started by slowly introducing all the characters yet not giving everything about them away and this pulled me in. The characters are well written, variable and relatable with the underrated yet important to the storyline Annika being my favourite. Just like in real life you get all sorts that make up the community you live in. The depictions of the setting and landscape of the sunshine coast were beautifully written fitting well within the storyline. Overall would recommend The Community for anyone who love a great crime read full of twists, turns and a descriptive well paced narrative plus the ending doesn’t leave you hanging to find out the after effects. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book by Christine Gregory. The fast paced story engaged me from the start and I find myself wanting to know more about the characters and their interactions within the community. It is a very atmospheric and thrilling novel, that depicts beautifully the complex and intriguing relationships in a small town. Marjolaine, WA, 4 stars

Who are you writing about in the prologue was the recurring thoughts as I was reading this book. Set in the quiet, peaceful Queensland hinterland, Steels Creek is for those who want the peace of mind of a community, where everyone knows everyone and looks out for each other. This book depicts what it is like to be the newcomer to the community and a disgraced journalist at that. When the body of a young woman is found in the waterhole, Lars feels duty-bound to investigate, even though it may cost him his relationship with his daughter and the rest of the community. There are characters and stories that make you want to care for them. Twists and turns that you won’t see coming. A great Australian crime drama. Nicole, VIC, 4 stars

When I first read the synopsis I initially expected a crime thriller, but then I found the book to be more of a layered exploration of community dynamics and relationships, which some readers may appreciate. The characters are diverse and well-developed, with realistic dialogue that immerses the reader in small-town life. Descriptive details paint the setting, enhancing the overall read of the book. I didn’t really feel an emotional connection to the characters and so they fell short of deep engagement. The narrative’s time shifts are handled adequately but occasionally disrupt the flow of tension, impacting the story’s momentum. My main reservation lies in the thinking that “The Community” is a crime thriller. While it features a murder and an investigator in Lars, the emphasis is more on the victims’ stories and personal dramas rather than traditional investigative thrills. This divergence may disappoint readers (as it did me) seeking a more suspenseful plot. The overall pacing is subdued, lacking the gripping tension expected in the genre. Despite these expectations “The Community” offers a worthwhile reading experience. Gregory’s narrative explores human connections and community intricacies, providing depth beyond typical genre boundaries. Kerrie, NSW, 4 stars

I really enjoyed this. Liked the fast pace of the writing. Where a chapter ended alluding to what the characters were about to do, it skipped all that in the next chapter & moved on to the consequences of their actions. It wasn’t stuffing around with all the bitty stuff & covering the action. It was great & I really hope there is a follow up with these characters sometime. Mandy, TAS, 4 stars

Excellent intriguing story . Very well written and held me interest throughout Kathleen, NSW, 4 stars

A crime novel set in paradise… it doesn’t get any better than that! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its cast of characters. The plot was captivating and the steamy tropical setting was so vividly described I was glad to be reading in the midst of a southern winter instead. Great book! Ruth, NSW, 4 stars

This is an Australian crime story set in Sunshine Coast Hinterland in Queensland. Immediately this location drew me in. This area has towns and of course the beautiful countryside. These areas add to the diversity of the folk in the book. Some of them have their own secrets and motive for the crime. A great Australian crime story. Recommend you read this book as I know you will enjoy it. Jonathan, NSW, 4 stars

If you are thinking cult then you are so very wrong…This story has a little bit of everything. A crime, mystery, family drama, traumatised background and of course, a little bit of romance, all set in the picturesque location of Sunshine Coast Hinterland. I found myself thoroughly enjoying this book, the characters, the location and the little twists and turns that keep you guessing along the way. Christine has created a well-rounded tale that keeps you entertained and captivated. Told from the point of view of Lars Nilsson, a troubled journalist, who is far from perfect. He is struggling with his career, personal life and relationship with his daughter. Lars ends up investigating the murder and his best friend’s daughter’s disappearance, but there is a little bit of a hiccup, not only does Lars have demons, but the police are not very big fans of his. This is a slow burn crime/mystery that will keep you entertained and turning the pages keen to see what happens and where it will end up. Nerelle, NSW, 4 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory was a story of murder, drugs and disappearance of 2 young people. It involved a newspaper reporter who was living in a small structured community run like a commune after having to leave his job in a large newspaper, his wife has left taking his daughter. He picks up freelance work in a local paper. After a young girl’s body was found he has to report on the investigation. The investigation draws in the young people in the community and his daughter. His work brings the crime to a conclusion and heals rifts with his family. Although it was a good story I thought the beginning was drawn out a bit as the players were introduced into the story. In the end it was well written and kept me interested. Gloria, SA, 4 stars

Set in regional Australia, the book does a great job of painting a picture of the rugged landscape, the impacts of extreme weather patterns (drought and summer storm) and the nature of small town innuendo and gossip. The character development was engaging and realistic, with some expected small town personalities and some new comers that automatically get cast with suspicion. Enjoyable read, with some opportunities to keep you guessing. My only criticism is that I would have liked to have known more about what happened next for some of the characters. Bree, NSW, 4 stars

I always love a good murder, mystery, and The Community was just that! The author depicted the Steel Creek community as a small, remote township that could be found in many parts of Australia. The young people of the area just wanted to head to the city, away from the small town boredom. You could feel the anguish of parents as they worried for their children The book took my interest from beginning to end. The characters we believable as was the plot. I particularly enjoyed Lars and Annika and their relationship. A couple of red herrings and twists in the story kept the reader wanting to turn the next page and read on. I’ve not read a book by Christine Gregory before, but would certainly recommend this one. Wilma, TAS, 4 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory has been sold as a mystery and a crime thriller. There’s a body that turns up very early in the story, crime story-style, but the real mystery and story is in the life of the “investigator”, Lars. I put investigator in inverted commas because he’s the ordinary guy who is drawn into this matter as he’s personally involved. This is a story about (as the title suggests) a community and about relationships more so than a murder mystery with solid clues. It will be interesting to those who love a good Aussie setting and clear writing, and some characters with problems to follow and untangle. It’s less a story for those who want a traditional detective tale where they can put the pieces together for themselves and figure out whodunnit along with a smart detective. I found the Australian environment especially well-written, I could very much see and feel the place, and the dialogue was very real. Rebecca, NSW, 4 stars

So much more than a murder mystery, The Community by Christine Gregory is a richly atmospheric tale of living an alternative lifestyle in a beautiful setting, but not being able to escape from your past or the problems of broader society. There are beautiful women and exotic strangers, but the story belongs to Lars Nilsson, lonely and exiled and longing for improved relations with his grown-up daughter. The expertly woven mystery will intrigue you with its twists and turns, but it is the character of Lars that will captivate you and leave you longing for more stories of this investigative journalist who just doesn’t seem to fit in. “He had come up here to find peace, but it eluded him still.” Get your pen and paper out to jot down Lars’ classic 70’s rock playlist, and while you are at it record how many different species of birds are mentioned adding another layer to the soundtrack of this immersive novel, where the weather will make you feel uncomfortable as you sweat it out with the rest of the community of Steels Creek. The Community by Christine Gregory For anyone who loves Australian crime novels, this one is for you. Set mainly in the Sunshine Coast hinterland the climate and weather, the forest, the countryside, the nearby towns and cities all play a part in creating mood, context and drama. The characters too, all have their parts to play. Innocence, guilt, secrets, fear and more. They are believable people whose opinions, misconceptions and motives make a complex web to untangle. I enjoyed the gradual reveal of the story which lead to a satisfying and believable conclusion. Led mainly by Lars as the determined and troubled journalist searching for answers to murder, finding the missing as well a coming to terms with his own past. Caroline, NSW, 4 stars

The short prologue sets the scene for the murder, and then we are taken three days prior. I found that I had to write down information about each character as we were introduced to them in the first few chapters. There were a lot of people with similar names. I was starting to like the characters and had to brace myself, hoping that they were not the person I’d eventually discover will die. I liked that there was an Asian detective, whose difference the characters were wary of. I also really felt for the protagonist Lars, particularly his yearning to make amends with his estranged daughter, and the anguish of facing his past. As I was reading, it felt like a long episode of a popular long-running crime TV series. It kept a fairly good pace before the picking up at the very end. There was nothing that shocked me, quite as much as other crime novels I’ve read. But I found this really entertaining all the same. Cindy, WA, 3 stars

The Community is a fast paced read you could easily not put down until you reach the last page. The idyllic setting is perfect for all the secrets and lies that are uncovered when a young woman is murdered and another has gone missing. The storyline is solid but did leave me wanting not quite hitting the mark. Worth the read , could have been so much more. Melanie, WA, 3 stars

A slow paced, but “don’t want to put it down until you know who did what” kind of read. It only takes one incident for numerous relationships to change. An accurate depiction of a small close knit community. Danae, TAS, 3 stars

The community of the title is a fictional Sunshine Coast hinterland one, a usually quiet and peaceful location until a body is found in a local waterhole. The discovery shines the light on the lives of the locals, and the secrets many of them are trying to conceal. The book has more than one narrator, including local police sergeant Neil Davis, and a one time successful journalist, Lars Nilsson, whose past rocky relationship with the police affects any type of partnership the pair could establish when investigating the current case. While I liked both Nilsson and Davis, the real star character of the book is the setting. Even though Gregory has taken some liberties, the natural beauty of the Queensland flora and fauna shines through and won me over when sometimes the plot was not as tense or tightly woven as I would have preferred. The Community reminded me quite a bit of Force of Nature by Jane Harper and The Whispering by Veronica Lando and would recommend it for fans of those books along with other readers who enjoy the Aussie crime/mystery genre. Lee, QLD, 3 stars

The Community by Christine Gregory Centred around the Steels Creek community in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Christine Gregory’s, novel follows investigative journalist, Lars Nilsson into finding out the truth behind a dead body and a missing best friend of his daughter, all the while trying to redeem his career on crime writing after a fall from grace. Gregory’s novel is told uniquely in a confusing complicated in-depth storyline. There are a lot of characters and character back stories to follow. Her story can sometimes go off topic and some of the plot is not needed because it can go away from the plot. There is also a lot of the extended story unfinished. This novel is more written for a movie plot than a novel. Arrisarne, VIC, 3 stars

This book got me hooked from the beginning. I felt like it dragged a little in the middle, but picked right back up for the final ending full of twists and turns. The characters and their relationships between one another were very relatable, drawing you in and packing emotion. Alexandra, TAS, 3 stars

Started at a slow burn but really revved it up until you just had to keep reading to put all the pieces together. Kept you on the hook with little red herrings here and there that made you think or change your view on the happenings in the story. An enjoyable read that you could enjoy over a weekend and pass it onto friends to also enjoy. Would definitely read the author again and recommend to friends and like-minded readers. Tracy, WA, 3 stars

I found it difficult to like the main character Lars, but at the same time I admired his courage in pursuing the truth. The Community was an easy read, with a few interesting characters. What I did enjoy was the author’s description of the bush, the heat. I could feel it as the book progressed. The storyline was a little weak, perhaps predictable at the end. Devoured it in 2 days. . Di, NSW, 3 stars

I found this book hard to follow at the start and unfortunately never fully engaged with it so only read a third before giving up. Dianne, SA, 1 star
