A Well-Crafted Thriller: Read Our Review of Airside by James Swallow

Beleaguered businessman Kevin Tyler’s life is imploding: he’s spent months setting up a deal to open an office in Northern Germany, risking everything he owns to push the project through. But at the last possible moment, his partners renege on the agreement when another party sweeps in with a better offer.

Left high and dry, Tyler knows he is going home to bankruptcy and an uncertain future. And to add insult to injury, an overbooked flight sees him bumped off the last plane home, leaving him behind to wait out a storm until the next departure the following morning.

Stranded by a storm in the airside zone of a remote municipal airport, Kevin’s luck seems to have run out – until he stumbles upon a bag of money that could be the solution to all his woes. There’s just one problem – the money is part of a conspiracy of blackmail and murder, and those involved are willing to do anything to keep it…

James Swallow is a New York Times, Sunday Times and Amazon bestselling author, a BAFTA nominee, a former journalist and the award-winning writer of over fifty books. To say that he knows how to craft and deliver a riveting read is an understatement. Airside contains all the ingredients for a great thriller: suspense, conflict and unexpected motivations, to name a few. Swallow’s screenwriting experience is also evident in Airside with both its pitch-perfect plotting and tight dialogue.

Airside is a highly entertaining read that asks the question, what would you do if you found a bag of money? The action takes place in a regional airport in Germany. Kevin is an interesting protagonist who’s quite ordinary, so the predicament he’s in makes this more compelling. While immediately suspenseful, the story has a slower start, allowing you to get to know the colourful cast of characters. Then, with perfect plotting, the tension rises until you’re ripping through the pages.

If you’re a fan of Reacher or Bourne books, or just well-crafted thrillers, you’ll love this.
