Your Preview Verdict: The Paris Mystery by Kirsty Manning

Paris, 1938. The last sigh of summer before the war.

As Australian journalist Charlotte ‘Charlie’ James alights at the Gare du Nord, ready to start her role as correspondent for The Times, Paris is in turmoil as talk of war becomes increasingly strident.
Charlie is chasing her first big scoop, needing to prove to her boss that she can do this job as well as, if not better than, her male counterparts. And the best way to forge the necessary contacts quickly is to make the well-connected expats, Lord and Lady Ashworth, her business. Lady Eleanor knows everyone who counts and at her annual sumptuously extravagant party, Charlie will meet them all.

On the summer solstice eve, the party is in full swing with the cream of Parisian society entranced by burlesque dancers, tightrope walkers, a jazz band and fireworks lighting the night skies. But as Charlie is drawn into the magical world of parties, couture houses and bohemian wine bars, secrets start to unravel, including her own. Putting a foot wrong could spell death …

In this magnificent new beginning to the joyful Charlie James series, Manning beguiles with glamour and mystery set in pre-war Paris.

Kirsty Manning, an amazing writer of such wonderful historical fiction as The Lost Jewels, has once again taken us back in time to Paris in 1938. This time with a mystery to solve. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting journalist Charlie James, amongst the fashion and parties of pre-war Paris. I look forward to more. Joanna, VIC, 5 Stars

The Paris Mystery by Kirsty Manning was a wonderfully written story set in 1938 pre-war Paris. The historical setting and the glitz and glamour were so beautifully described I felt deeply immersed in the story and the character development. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I look forward to reading other works by Kirsty Manning. Brittany, VIC, 5 Stars

From the time I opened the first page I could not put this book down. The writing is beautiful. You are immediately transported to le tout-Paris of 1938. The descriptions are so real they tempt all your senses. You can smell the flowers in the market and taste the heavenly food and champagne. With Kirsty’s descriptions of the couture, you can feel the luxurious fabrics and visualise the breath-taking designs especially those worn by Viola with her trademark Hermes handbag dangling nonchalantly on her wrist. Charlotte (Charlie) James carries the story beautifully. She is an indomitable character who is so real. I love her passion for her work as a journalist and how she achieved her dream. The twists that take place as the plot develops are so unexpected. At each turn you realise how disconnected le tout-Paris are compared to the ‘normal’ citizens. Each character is extremely well developed, and Lady Ashworth is truly a lady of great vision. The conclusion is totally unexpected. Well done Kirsty for writing such a wonderful book that completely captures the reader and leaves you with a feeling that anything can happen in Paris the city of dreams. Sarah, WA, 5 Stars

Thank you to Better Reading for an ARC of this novel by Australian author, Kirsty Manning. Historical Fiction is my favourite genre and having read and loved several previous books written by Kirsty Manning, she was now on my list of favourite authors. I was, therefore, delighted to get a review copy of “The Paris Mystery” which was released in 2022. I was not disappointed. I liked that the book was set in pre-war Paris, a city that fascinates me. The MC was Australian journalist, Charlie James, a young woman determined to make her way in the world of journalism, which up to now was dominated by her male counterparts. She was looking for a big scoop that would show her boss just how good a journalist she was. Although the novel can be read as a stand-alone, I was delighted to discover that it is intended to be the first in a series about Charlie James. I so enjoyed getting to know Charlie in this book and look forward to reading more of her adventures as the series continues. Charlie reminded me a little of Phrynie Fisher from Kerry Greenwood’s novels. Both are beautiful, feisty women, determined to overshadow the males in their workplace. This was a 5* read for me, and one that I am very happy to recommend to other readers. Ruth, WA, 5 Stars

The Paris Mystery is a story of style and elegance. Set in the 1930’s glamour and secrets of the Parisian society are brought to our minds as the backdrop for the story. The main character Charlie James is a strong female character and we go with her on her journey of correspondent in a tough mans world. She is at a party when there is a murder and this is where the murder mystery part of the story begins. I found at times that I was so caught up in the story and Charlie’s journey that I forgot it was a murder mystery. Usually I’m trying to ‘solve the crime’ as I read but this book is so beautiful and stylish that I was just enjoying the read. Vivid descriptions and great story telling make this an unforgettable read. Ann-Marie, SA 5 Stars

Charlie (Charlotte) James a reporter with a Sydney newspaper successfully secures a job with the Paris office of the London Times just prior to World War 2. When she arrives in Paris it seems that she will start covering social stories of the rich and their soirees. She knows that she will have to work extremely hard to impress her editor and looks to do in-depth interviews with an expatriate socialite who has ensconced herself and her husband into Parisian life. This then turns into a big break for her. Murder amongst the rich at a Carnival night is just the beginning. This leads to investigations of various key people. Secrets and wheeling and dealing are uncovered amongst the backdrop of fashion and culture. The reader is held spellbound right till the end with twists and turns. A murder mystery which will keep you wanting more. Lisa, SA, 5 Stars

Another fantastic book by Kirsty Manning! Was hooked from beginning to end! Paris the city of love and new dreams… also murder! This book keeps you guessing right to the end! When you think you’ve got the murder worked out it changes paths. We follow reporter Charlie James on her journey of reporting until the murder is found! Who could it be? Any of the diplomats, the designer/dressmaker, the money man, the circus performer, the Lord or Lady? You’ll just have to read it yourself to find out! Another fantastically written book that keeps you hooked until the end! I would highly recommend this book for an easy but mystery filled read! Amy, ACT, 5 Stars

The Paris Mystery by Kirsty Manning was so hard to put down! It drew me in from the prologue and further enticed me with the introduction of the independent and likeable female reporter, Charlie James, in the first chapter. Bringing together two of my favourite genres, mystery and historical fiction, Manning has produced a well written novel set amid the glamour and elegance of pre-war Paris. Charlie James has travelled from Australia to Paris to work as a correspondent for The Times and needs to prove herself as a serious reporter, which is difficult in the male dominated era. Chasing her first big story she forms a connection with the eminent Lady Ashworth and secures an invitation to her elaborate, annual soiree where everyone who is anyone will be in attendance. Charlie becomes a central part of the mystery that ensues and uses her connections and her own clever deductive skills to investigate and uncover hidden secrets. I am so excited that Manning has decided to write a series based on Charlie James and cannot wait to read more about this intriguing and captivating character. Mary-Jo, VIC, 5 Stars

This playful and immersive mystery is set in pre-war Paris and explores the beginning of a new Australian reporter’s career in this exciting and different environment. This book was engaging and exciting, I had to have a few late nights to get through it as quickly as possible to discover the end of the story. Charlie James was a great lead in the book and I really enjoyed her approach and attitude in what was a volatile and critical time in history. It was fun and a quick read that I have already recommended to a friend for a great engaging book to read. Tess, QLD, 5 Stars

The Paris Mystery is a sophisticated and stylish journey through 1938 Paris, populated with quirky characters, gorgeous clothing and more than a hint of danger. Divorced, thirty-something, Australian journalist Charlotte ‘Charlie’ James has come to Paris to start over and, perhaps, to prove to herself that she can survive and thrive on her own. As she settles into her new apartment and job, she finds herself caught up in a murder investigation involving some wealthy expats. Her determination to solve the murder brings her into contact with a charming policeman and a cast of characters who force her to consider corruption, elitism and entitlement. Before long she’s deep in clues, theories and danger. Charlie is relatable, down-to-earth and friendly as well as a capable journalist. For me a standout character was her friend, Violet, who dressed exquisitely and had a wonderful dressmaker/designer for a boyfriend. He was also incredibly generous, allowing us a look at Parisian nightlife with Charlie dressed to thrill. This is a charming historical mystery, perfect for lovers of Paris, fashion, the period between the wars and strong female detectives. I’m hoping we’ll see more of Charlie James in the future. Cherie, VIC, 5 Stars

This was such a fun murder mystery, set in a magical and enchanting pre-war era Paris. I loved everything about it! The descriptions of Parisian life, the city and the food, made me feel like I was there and I especially enjoyed the beautifully depicted fashions of the time. The circus ball was particularly mesmerising; there is just something magical and otherworldly about the circus. Many of the high society characters were suitably unlikeable however, I loved that there were some strong female characters. I adored the spunky main character, journalist Charlotte ‘Charlie’ James and her adventures as she tries to navigate her new life in Paris in the male dominated newspaper world and help solve a murder mystery. I’m very excited that this is the first in a new series and can’t wait to follow Charlie on her next adventure. Sharon, VIC, 5 Stars

Kirsty Manning has written a magnificent book, The Paris Mystery. Through her amazing story telling you will transport into a older world, into a world full of mystery with Charlie leading the way. Charlie is elegant, intelligent, beautiful and proud. The perfect character to introduce the reader to a new series. This is a book that I couldn’t put down.. a book that I read twice in a week and intend on reading again. I cannot wait to read what Kirsty Manning writes next. Brooke, NSW, 5 Stars

Oh how I can almost see pre-war 1930s Paris. The vivid colours, the fashion, the music and the parties! The Paris Mystery is like being transported back in time. The story is classic mystery genre but with a bit more, including ‘Charlie’ the smart Australian redhead determined to move forward from her old life and show she is as good a journalist (if not better) than any man. Apparently, this is the first in a new character series by Kristy Manning, and I look forward to more. Tess, TAS, 5 Stars

This glitzy glamorous murder mystery was a delight to delve into! We first meet our main character as they arrive from Australia to Paris, ready to make a name for themselves as the new Times UK correspondent. Charlie James is met by the new boss & newspaper chief at the station who is surprised when it is a Woman strolling towards him, Charlie isn’t ‘Charles’ as expected but is short for ‘Charlotte’. The Cheif assistant, Violet, is excited and has a sparkle in her eye as she finally has a gal pal in her male dominated working environment. Violet, from money herself, promises to introduce Charlie to the high class & people she needs to know to be in the in-crowd so she can get her exclusive story to impress their boss. We are whirled through pages of high fashion and a spectacular party that ends in a murder. Charlie was there at the party and sets out to get to the bottom of the mystery and write up an impressive article so she can lose the stigma of being a crack Female reporter! I loved the descriptions of Paris, the people and the fashions! It was a great case with a few red herrings. I also enjoyed riding along with Charlie as she worked with the Inspector to get her exclusive and solve the hottest crime in town! A wonderful murder mystery book that was a fun read! Alli, VIC, 5 Stars

What a wonderful book. I really enjoyed reading this book by an author new to me. Charlie James arrives in Paris ready for the challenge of being The Times new foreign correspondent. Her aim was to get into the circle of well connected ex-pats to be able to find out what was really happening in Paris. Her very first function she attended a body was found. So we have an intriguing story of suspects, social functions, and all manner of romances. Beautiful fashion features in this book too. Pre war Paris and all its intrigues and dramas keeps you riveted to the pages of this really good novel. Lyndsay, QLD, 5 Stars

Wow this book was a fantastic read. Didn’t feel like it was set in such a different time, like I could still relate to it & all the characters, despite not having been to Paris or rich! A very clever murder mystery, which has you believing it could be any of those main characters & never did I see or think it was the one that is revealed at the end!!! Will there be a sequel??? Loved it!! Melanie, VIC, 5 Stars

This book took me straight to the streets of Paris, with flamboyant characters, beautiful settings and plenty of chic fashion. Following hot on the heels of the smart, newly single, journalist Charlie, who’s proving she’s better than any man at her job, we meet some colourful characters, while we try to work out which one is capable of murder. Bestselling Author Kirsty Manning has not disappointed with this page turning murder mystery. Rebecca, NSW, 5 Stars

I absolutely loved this book and found myself unable to put The Paris Mystery down. I was hooked by the Author’s descriptions of Paris in the 30s. The fashion, the glamour and the characters, especially Charlie James had me unable to put this down. I love the Cover Art and as soon as I saw this I had to have it, and wasn’t disappointed. A highly addictive page turner that keeps you guessing! I enjoyed every minute. This was the first book I’ve read by Kirsty Manning and it definitely won’t be the last. I can’t wait for the next book in the Charlie James series! Erena, VIC, 5 Stars

The Paris Mystery – a very enjoyable light read with a twist of mystery. From chic curbside cafes to spectacular parties the book invites you into the world of pre World War II Paris society. Kirsty Manning’s writing is so wonderfully descriptive that you feel drawn into the novel as one of the characters, rubbing shoulders with the elite and helping the young heroine solve the mystery. If you love a light mystery with a side of vintage Paris fashion this book is for you. Sarah, QLD, 4 Stars

The Paris Mystery by Kirsty Manning features Australian journalist Charlie James newly arrived in Paris, 1938, starting her new job as correspondent for The Times. Her first job is to write an article on Lady Eleanor Ashworth and Parisian society. While attending Lady Ashworth’s society party a rich Parisian banker is found murdered. This gives Charlie the chance to prove herself to her boss and co-workers, with a big scoop story if she can somehow get some leads on solving this mysterious murder. This is a light and entertaining read. Set just before the start of WWII with high society parties and fabulous details of the glamourous fashions of the time. Karin, VIC, 4 Stars

Not having read any of Kirsty Manning’s books before, this book was a delight. From the start, the strong, intelligent correspondent engaged you and immersed you in the glamour of pre-war Paris, where she had landed a job as correspondent for The Times, in an era where women mostly covered the social events, not news items. Very quickly, she becomes embroiled in a society murder and uses all her considerable skills to help solve the mystery. Light-hearted but intelligently written, the story moves along at a clip to the denouement. A very satisfying, engaging read. I look forward to more Charlie James mysteries. Robyn, QLD, 4 Stars

Meet Charlie James, the plucky young heroine of the new mystery series by Kirsty Manning. Fresh off the boat from Australia after a failed marriage, Charlie begins a job as a journalist correspondent for The Times in Paris. Set during the years preceding WW2, Paris is dazzling with balls, parties, high fashion and much good food and wine. Charlie though, gets more than she bargains for when she is witness to a murder whilst attending the Winter Circus soirée near Versailles. Charlie becomes detective as she races to solve the mystery alongside Inspecteur Benoit Bernard. Readers will love Charlie for her bravery and pluckiness. Working as a journalist in this era is definitely a Man’s game, but Charlie is out to show Women are just as capable. With a cast of characters, all of whom appear to be guilty of one thing or another, The Paris Mystery sparkles, as does the Paris setting. I wanted to be in Paris, wearing the couture dresses, eating the fine Parisian food, and taking in the sights. I raced through this book and look forward to more adventures with Charlie in the future. Emma, NSW, 4 Stars

Pre-war Paris – and the uncertain times are tinged with fashion, frivolity and murder to allow a fresh new perspective on a well-trodden part of history. The mix of intriguing characters with a variety of backgrounds were terrific on their own, while the mystery also kept me guessing. The work of main character, Charlie James, and the nods to the history of female journalism allowed a particularly interesting point of view. I really enjoyed this book and hope it’s just the start of many more featuring Charlie James and her friends, as there are so many paths that could be taken in future stories. Katie, NSW, 4 Stars

Paris 1938 – Charlie James begins her new job as Times Correspondent and her first feature piece to prove she’s as good as the men is an interview with a titled couple which will give her an entree into French society. This is followed by a decadent party with interesting characters, resulting in a “who done it”! Nobody is above suspicion and we learn through Charlie’s interviews everyone’s secrets- including her own. A story with many twists & turns to keep you on your toes right to the very last page. The first of a Charlie James’ series by Kirsty Manning. Marice, NSW, 4 Stars

In “The Paris Mystery” Kirsty Manning has written what may prove to be the first in a series featuring Charlie Jones an Australian journalist who gets her dream job as a Times correspondent in Paris in pre World War Two. She is thrown into a world of high society, haute couture, exotic locations and fine French food. Whilst reporting on the comings and goings at a charity event held by the fabulous Lady Ashworth, ex pat Brits and local prominent celebrities she finds herself on the spot at a murder scene. This is not your average murder mystery but is entertaining and holds the reader’s interest to the end. I look forward to reading more of Charlie’s adventures in future. Robyn, NSW, 4 Stars

Written by Australian author Kirsty Manning, this book is part murder mystery, part women’s liberation and part French high society. We follow Australian journalist Charlie James who arrives in Paris in 1938 to take on a new job working for The Times. Reporting on prominent British expats, moving in the circles of wealthy and somewhat controversial local identities, Charlie quickly gets more than she bargained for and finds herself reporting on a murder instead of extravagant high society parties. This book was interesting, being from the perspective of a journalist instead of a detective. The murder case was told from the inside, rather than from the outside. An enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more books by this author. Bree, NSW, 4 Stars

The Paris Mystery is the first novel in the Charlotte ‘Charlie’ James series by Kirsty Manning. The series introduces Charlie James, an Australian journalist newly arrived in Paris to take up the role of foreign correspondent for The Times newspaper. Set in 1938 on the cusp of WWII, Paris is a city of glamorous parties, beautiful couture, flowing alcohol and murder. When Charlie finds herself caught up in a murder investigation she follows the clues to both write articles for The Times and to assist handsome Inspecteur Bernard to solve the case. I thoroughly enjoyed The Paris Mystery. The author has created a protagonist in Charlie who is likeable, smart and determined to prove herself in a city of magic and beauty. While the champagne flows the mystery twists and turns and I look forward to the next book in the series. Thanks to Better Reading for a free preview copy. Patricia, QLD, 4 Stars
